KONGINSIGHT

Data sources

Everything on KongInsight comes from Hong Kong government open data. This is the whole list: which department issued it, the official dataset name, how often the government updates it, and the date we retrieved the copy the site is serving right now.

Last updated 18 Sep 2026

“Retrieved” means the date we downloaded it — not the date the government changed it. Those are different, and the difference matters: the modified field on data.gov.hk records when the metadata was edited, not the data. We measure freshness from the file’s own HTTP Last-Modified instead. Current copies span 31 Aug 2026 to 18 Sep 2026.

Statutory orders and notices on buildings

Drives the red flags on every building page. Each of these is published as two separate lists — orders issued and orders cleared — with different start dates.

Building age, storeys and height

Occupation permit dates give the year built; storeys and height above ground come from the Lands Department 3D model, measured rather than taken from the label.

School nets

Real Education Bureau boundaries, not an estate list. Primary One Admission and Secondary School Places Allocation work differently — see the school net pages.

The daily archive

The government publishes the current state of these datasets and overwrites it. There is no history, no changelog, and a record that disappears from a list cannot be retrieved from any official source.

Since 31 Aug 2026 KongInsight has archived 9 of them every day 4 Buildings Department order lists and 5 Food and Environmental Hygiene Department licence lists. Comparing two days is the only way to see when a record entered a list or left it, and leaving a list is the closest public evidence that an order was complied with.

Licence and reuse

The underlying datasets are published under the DATA.GOV.HK terms of use and the CSDI terms, which permit copying, adaptation and commercial use with attribution. KongInsight’s own derived layers — measured building heights, facade orientation, distance to a school net boundary, sun and shadow — are not government data and are not covered by those terms.

Building a dataset on top of this? Tell us what you need. We would rather the joined data existed publicly than be the only ones with it.

Scale

342,249 building footprints · 11,953 land-use zones · 375,154 land lots · 57 CSDI datasets in 9 packs on the map, plus the 14 datasets in the table above that drive the building and school net pages.
